Ian Bell and I set out to make a game for ourselves rather than for some imagined market. It was the first true 3D game too, and set many other benchmarks. It was the first ‘open world’ game in which the player can freely roam a vast space. “Elite” has gone down in history as one of the most successful games of the 1980s.
